CONNECTICUT — Connecticut's new daycare mask mandate goes into effect Monday. All children over the age of 3 years old are required to wear face masks in child care settings.

Programs have until Oct. 19 to fully phase in the requirement in order to give children, family and staff time to get used to the new rule, according to the state Office of Early Childhood. Exceptions can be made for children who have a health condition or developmental need that makes wearing masks difficult or impossible.

The change came after the American Academy of Pediatrics and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention changed guidance on mask use for children.

Children can take off their masks during meals and at nap time, but distance between children must be maximized during that time. Children can also remove masks during outdoor activities and during "mask breaks" so long as social distancing can be maintained.

Some daycare programs have already had young children wear masks with success.

Some tips from the OEC on how to get your young children to wear a mask:
  • Have children pick out a mask that is their favorite color or allow them to personalize it.
  • Let your children see you wear a mask and teach them how to properly put one on and take it off.
  • Tell children that mask use helps keep germs away from others, similar to washing hands.
  • Use positive reinforcement.
  • Practice mask wearing at home and make it part of a daily routine.
