Greater Bay Area, CA- Amid Pandemic, Scouts Safely Serve Community

An excerpt from the Scout Oath holds true: to help other people at all times. Since the beginning of shelter in place, the need for food assistance in the bay area has doubled. Food insecurity has increased across pockets of our communities, greatly affecting our neighbors and friends. As the holiday season edges closer, the local chapter of the Boy Scouts of America seeks community support in their annual Scouting for Food Drive.

The Scouts are taking a new look on their veteran food program. Due to COVID-19, there will be many drop off location sites throughout the bay area. These sites will be hosted by Scouts and volunteers on specific days and times, all found on their local website https://ggacbsa.org/scouting-for-food-2020/ Some campaigns cover a full week while others are a single day.

Monetary donations go much farther than the cans in your cupboard. For every dollar donated, the local food banks can purchase up to $7 worth of food. This also allows for the food banks to purchase items that cannot be donated including milk and eggs, necessities for young families. By following the link previously mentioned, you can donate any value online.

"We know that things look very different this year," says Scout mom and volunteer, Shannon Durbala of Pack 943 in Pleasanton. "The need for food is still the same and we are excited to help lessen that burden on families."

In June of 2020, three local Scout Councils in the bay area elected to merge forming the new Golden Gate Area Council (GGAC). Over 20,000 youth are served in Counties including San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Napa, Solano, and Lake. "The new council means that we get to serve more youth in our leadership program," Continues Durbala. "I don't know of any other organization that teaches service like the Scouts do."

GGAC would like to thank Alameda County Industries, Republic Services, and Recycle Smart for their continued support in serving our communities with their support of this event.
